Artist Testimonial for Rest Stop Rejuvenate – Rockaway , NJ
Danielle Stauss (aka) Rabbit Velvet, and lead vocalist for Afterglow
Great places to gig can be right in your backyard. Rest Stop Rejuvenate, in Rockaway Borough caters to many levels of musicianship, and really builds community in the stronghold that is “new localism” in music. I have had the great fortune of playing Rest Stop Rejuvenate as both an open mic participant, and as an indie artist. RSR is a kind, cozy treasure of an offering, in the way of live music venues.
During their Open Mic Night. All the performers sign up, and get a chance to play at least 3 songs, if they choose. The vibe is incredible: kind support for all, no matter how young and new to the stage, or seasoned the performer. On one particular open mic night, there were fledgling teens shaking under the spotlights, getting through their songs, and firming up their “stage legs”, to artists who had played in Prog Rock bands through the seventies, and had full on Broadway pit-band careers. All were supportive and made each other feel really connected being up on stage. A wonderful – noncompetitive vibe, I find comforting and crucial counter activity to the development of music as an art form, in the shallow face of American Idolism.
Playing Rest Stop Rejuvenate as Rabbit Velvet – my solo project, and then with Afterglow – a rock-folk ensemble, has been brilliant as well. RSR has a wonderful sound system on par with that of larger rock “clubs”, and comfy living room seating. Owner, Vicky Mulligan and the other staff/volunteers at RSR are extremely accommodating, and quick to share information about the history and philosophy of RSR. The rustic and eclectic look of the interior, really make you feel “at home” as you are playing in a very intimate setting to a more attentive group of people who are really there to see you. I can’t say, because I’ve never been but, it could be like an old colonial tavern, where listening to the music would be the paramount form of entertainment. The family is welcome as well, which gives the much younger set a chance to see great musicianship close up, as well as to practice the empathetic behaviors associated with respecting and being inspired by the artists.
In summation, while working as a performer over the past decades, I have gotten chances to play stages from Nashville to Toronto – big and small, and RSR is just right for the fledgling to serious musician. I hope more of the community continues to make it their home away from home for live music, and discover what an amazing place RSR is, and what a unique and important offering Vicky Mulligan has in the new world of independent music.
Vicky - thanks so much for having us at Rest Stop Rejuvenate on Saturday night - we were thrilled to play in your "living room," the energy was so positive and you and your audience made us feel so welcomed. It was a fantastic night. See you soon!Sonas.
