Hi there! To start your own blog you must first register.

When Vicky asked if I would be interested in facilitating the Poetry Well group I immediately said, “yes!” Having been in search of a writers group for, well, ever, I was excited at the opportunity.
I began writing poetry at age 8 or 9 and carried it throughout my life. When the Poetry Well came about I hadn’t written a poem in quite some time and relished the thought of bringing it back into my life.

Our group is one of support, encouragement and complete appreciation for the written word-and the writer. We understand what it takes to get those feelings on paper and then to be able to share them? ? Yep, we get that.

Our goal, is to share, enjoy and discuss poetry that moves us, inspires us, brings about emotion and conversation. We aren’t about critiquing or analyzing each line to make it better-we just want to read and share poetry.

If you are a poet, looking for others who write and love poetry, enjoy conversation and perhaps are even a little reluctant to share-we welcome you! Hope you can join us!

“I always wanted to learn guitar.”

It was a phrase that my husband Scott and I had often said while sitting on our porch in the evenings. We both had done the year or two of a musical instrument in grade school but had admittedly forgotten most of what we had learned.

Then, after spending a year enjoying Open Mic, I bought Scott a guitar for Christmas-and that’s when things changed! He loved playing it at night, learning new chords. At Open Mic many of the performers would stick around, jamming, laughing and were all more than happy to show him a few things. When the Beginner Guitar Group with Joe Fischetti was formed Scott joined them on Sundays to jam, learn new songs and have fun.

How could I not join in?

I could not have created a better a group to learn guitar. We have fun, we laugh and we LEARN! For someone who has a guitar that they, “mess around with” or anyone who says, “ah, no I mean I know a few chords but I don’t play,” then this is the group for you! Even the more experienced players are growing learning lead guitar, some music theory and just trying out new music; often time their own originals.

I always look forward to this group and couldn’t recommend it enough to anyone who has ever, “wished I could play like that.”

I don’t remember what it was that brought me to my first Open Mic at Rest Stop Rejuvenate. Why I picked that night, where I saw something about it or what I was doing during the day leading up to it. What I do remember is the warm welcome I received upon arrival. The warm cup of coffee warming my hands. The cookies that melted in my mouth while I sat on a comfy sofa listening to the varied talents of the evenings artists.

That was more than 2 years ago and Open Mic has become a ritual that we look forward to every month. I don’t believe an artist could find a more welcoming, supportive space to share their work, branch out or try something for the first time. The space that Vicky has created seems to call to those gentle souls who really understand what it takes to get on that stage and share a bit of yourself.

If you find yourself looking for something to do. Something that will enrich your soul, fill your creative pot to overflow or just an evening out with nice people-this is the event for you.

Who knows, you may even find yourself on stage.

Blue Soul peforming at Rest Stop Rejuvenate Feb. 2012

There really isn’t a musical experience quite like a musical experience at Rest Stop Rejuvenate. The opportunity to listen to one of the many wonderful performers that have graced Rest Stop’s Stage in this cozy environment is unlike any other. The ability to really hear the music and connect with the artists leaves you feeling enriched and yes, rejuvenated.
This past weekend I was fortunate enough to hear Blue Soul perform. This charismatic group of performers provides an engaging performance that makes the audience feel as if they are part of the show. Whether performing one of their original songs or their own rendition of a favorite covers this talented group pull you in from the first note. I would not be surprised if they were able to get a group of staunch business men to perform karoke-resistence would be futile.

There is no need to head into the city when there is such amazing talent performing right around the corner from home here in Rockaway! Check out the calendar today!

How have you made a difference in the life of another?  I can think of a simple act of kindness that made all the difference in a strangers perspective on life.

One day I was driving on Rt. 280 and there was a car that had a flat tire.  I helped them cross the highway then got out of the car to see if they needed any further assistance.  There were two people in the car, an elderly woman and her Grandson.  The elderly woman was scared and could not believe that a white person would help a black person.  She was clearly dismayed and touched deeply.  From this moment on she could no longer say that white people don’t care about black people.  Wow!!! I still get chills when I think about it.

‘A Sacred Activist is someone who is starting to experience the inner joy and outer effectiveness of this force, who knows that the profound crisis the world is in is challenging everyone to act from our deepest compassion and wisdom, and who is committed to being, in the face of growing chaos, sufferings, and violence, what Robert Kennedy called ‘a tiny ripple of hope’ and a ‘center of energy and daring.’
